Women in Toys Scholarship

I used Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign to create this project

"I thought about a toy that I would have wanted growing up and I started researching Barbie. I thoroughly searched the internet and the Barbie website to see if a Color Guard Barbie was ever made and I found nothing. Then I looked for a Marching Band Barbie, and the most recent one was from the 1990’s, over 30 years ago, and the other few were from the 1950’s and 1960’s. There has not been a recent edition of a Marching Band Barbie and there has never been a Color Guard Barbie. The marching band barbies that are available on the market now are vintage barbies being sold on eBay for over hundreds of dollars and are very outdated. So I wanted to design a color guard and marching band barbie, specifically having Barbie as a Drum Major, because in the 1950’s and 1960’s Barbie Parade Set, they only had Ken as Drum Major, and there are many women drum majors in High School and Collegiate Marching Bands across the world. My design idea was to present a collection of college marching band barbies, with different editions for different universities in various conferences. I would select bands from the Big 10, the SEC, and Big 12. The average size of a collegiate marching band has around 220 members. I chose to design uniforms for the Razorback Marching Band at the University of Arkansas because I have been in the program for 4 years now and wanted to spotlight an organization that has had a huge impact on my life. I hope in the future, children and even adults, will be able to buy a doll that represents them as a member of a Marching Band or Color Guard, because there are Barbies for Football, Cheerleading, Dance, Basketball, Swim, and various other activities. Marching Band, especially Color Guard, is not represented very often even though they are fundamental for pep rallies and keeping up morale at any College Football game as well as any university campus event. I also designed a child sized flag so a child can also spin a flag along with their Color Guard barbie, just like she does."
